LandCare’s Value Chain Project

LFPI   Implements Value Chain Research in CDO and Claveria

Landcare Philippines (Landcare) with the assistance from University of the Philippines (UP) Mindanao serves as a major research collaborator for the project, “Development of Fruits and Vegetable Value Chains and Integrating them with Community Development in the Southern Philippines”. The project funded by the Australian Center for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) covers sites in Ormoc City in Leyte, Davao City and Claveria-Cagayan de Oro City areas.

LFPI is tasked to oversee the R&D work on value chain development of tomato, cabbage and major “pinakbet” type of vegetables in Misamis Oriental particularly in Claveria and Cagayan de Oro areas. More specifically, the value chain research focus will essentially look at the chain dynamics of the two types of value chain; 1) those farmers that are into formal and non-formal type of production financing and those farmer groups that are self- financed (non-finance) in their production activities.

The project has a timetable of 4 years; the first year is purely research on the value chain analysis with the aim of identifying possible areas for Value Chain improvement and Community Development. The remaining 3 years will be devoted to value chain development where identified vegetable value chain innovations will be pilot-tested for implementation in selected pilot communities. The Leyte component site is handled by the Visayas State University and Davao City by UP-Mindanao.
