ACIAR Conference on Horticulture Program

ACIAR, PCAARRD-DOST Southern Philippines Horticulture Program Meet in Davao City

The Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and the Philippine Council for Aquatic, Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources (PCAARRD) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) conducted the Southern Philippines Horticultural Program Annual Meeting last September 4-5, 2014 at Waterfront-Insular Hotel, Davao City.


The meeting was attended by at least 5 major horticultural research programs in the Southern Philippines funded by ACIAR.  More than one hundred participants across various project component groups, projects partner’s, stakeholders and staff attended in the said annual meeting. Each group of different R&D projects presented the initial results and highlights of their respective activities. Update presentation during the meeting ranges from integrated crop/pest management, post-harvest, soil management and crop nutrition to value chain and communities research on fruits and vegetables.

The meeting was concluded with some resolution, discuss coordination issues/concerns and tightening of plans and direction for the succeeding years.  The panels of reviewers were coming from PCAARRD, ACIAR and DA-11. Other participating institutions include University of Queensland, University of the Philippines Los Baños, University of the Philippines Mindanao, Visayas State University, Misamis Oriental State College of Agriculture and Technology, Bohol Island State University, Northwest Samar State University and Gaisano and Landcare Philippines.

Landcare will continuously support local initiatives for sustainable agriculture and natural resources management in the Philippine uplands and other ecosystems through action-research and extension services mainly in partnership with local peoples’ organization, local government units and other service providers in the environment and agricultural sector.

Specifically, Landcare’s advocacies are focus on livelihood development for small farmers within the context of soil and water conservation, integrated sustainable agriculture, climate change adaptation and mitigation and natural resource management.
